Foundations of Adolph Tidemann’s Bridge in Mandal City Centre
Scope
Design of foundations.
Characteristics
Adolph Tidemann's Bridge is a new pedestrian bridge that crosses the Mandal River in Mandal City Center. At the point of tender, the whole bridge was a general contract, but the budget requirements resulted in the choice of an alternative foundation method. Foundations were performed as a turnkey contract under the auspices of AF Construction, while the superstructure was continued as a main contractor.
The bridge has a total length of approximately 160m and is embedded abutments up to each bank and 2 foundations in the river which gives 3 main spans. The superstructure is a steel structure with hydraulic 12m flap in the middle of the mid span. Foundations are built up with angle steel core piles anchored in the rock with a concrete beam on top. Depth to hard rock varies with thickness of sand up to approximately 50m.
